Character Backstory

Originally, Khei was a Raen Au Ra hailing from the city of Kugane in the Source. She was born into a family of trained samurai's that never strayed from the path of the blade. Many joined the peacekeeping force of Sekiseigumi, others became masters at their craft to teach others the way of the Samurai. However Khei, who then held the family last name of Buhen, had no interested in becoming a Samurai. Instead, they were more interested in the path that their Miqo'te mom took: an adventurer.
He was warned all throughout her childhood by his Auri mother of the tragedy that had befallen his adventurous mom, her lover, when she decided to one day leave Kugane herself. Though the mother never really knew of what happened to the Miqo'te mom, only that she was reported dead in another part of the world. But Khei did not listen to her mother's warning and started to rebel against his daily training and their own mother. He would sneak away from the training grounds before practice, neglect the individual training each student was assigned, and even got into fights with their sensei and mother. This was until the head of the household, Khei's grandfather on his mom's side, caught wind of the situation. Khei's mother expected her child to be swiftly punished and straightened up but to the entire family's surprise, the head of the household gave Khei his blessing to forego their assigned training and pursue what he truly desired. Though it left her relationship with his mother sour, they left as soon as possible and embarked on the next ship to the land she was told that his mother traveled to, a land that the young Auri had constantly heard of near the docks of Kugane: Eorzea. She arrived in Limsa Lominsa and decided to take up any odd job he could find while looking for information about what happened to their Miqo'te mom. This lead him to travel to Gridania and join the Adventurer's Guild there, as Khei's mother was once a member for some time as well. While completing their duties to the Guild, she had learned that his Miqo'te mother was killed in crossfire between the Garlean empire and the Woodwailers of Gridania. This wasn't the first time that he had heard of the empire, knowing all too well of it's oppressing power and thirst for conquest back in Kugane. Though she continued with his work with the Guild, they did all that they could to learn more about who exactly killed her mom, whether it was intentional or not. From here, the story of the Warrior of Light continues on, as is foretold across all of Eitherys. Though she has done many things that he would never have thought possible, she is still an adventurer at heart. So with the promise she made in Ultima Thule with Hades (EW spoilers) and their silent promise made to her lost mother, he continues to walk their path, unburdened.

But you may ask, how exactly did this Raen Au Ra suddenly become a mix of Raen Au Ra and Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te? Well, it isn't exactly uncommon knowledge that some sellers on the streets of major cities sell a mysterious potion called a Fantasia. Though its contents and trustworthiness are unknown, there are some who have taken the chance with the potion and was then able to change their appearance overnight! One such seller had approached dear Khei Altaire with the offer of a "Fantasia", saying it would do wonders for the poor adventurer in helping her feel "revitalized after everything that he has done for us" (this was not long after averting the Final Days and returning from the fight with Endsinger [EW spoilers]). He saw no reason to distrust the man, as the deal was being made in the broad daylight of the Sapphire Exchange in Ul'dah, and so they took the potion. However, unlike the effect that she had seen done to others, theirs seemed... incomplete. Though the stature and appearance of himself appeared to change mostly into a Miqo'te like her late mom, their scales, sensitivity to the cold, and even her blue tongue persisted through the change.
It was bizarre how wrong the transformation went, and the seller had seemingly vanished with no trace of where he went. Though he has been searching for this individual for a couple of years now, no one can find any information on the false merchant. Khei had attempted to drink other such Fantasia's, to see if the real deal would change him back but with no luck and no difference in their appearance. Though it was a hard change for her to come to terms with, everyone had grown accustomed and accepted their new appearance. In fact, most people had even recognized him when they next saw her even after the change was made, saying something along the lines of "I could tell it was still you" and "It didn't even register in my mind that you had changed, you're still the Khei we all know afterall". So even though they continue to search for the criminal that did this to him, they have grown used to and even partially found of how she now looks.

Class Backstory

Khei is versed in a few different weapons but only wields two with high proficiency. Growing up, she learned how to wield a katana like his mother, as was mentioned previously. But after leaving Kugane, she did not have the heart to wield such a blade anymore. Instead, they chose to wield the same weapon her mom wielded on her many adventures across Eorzea: a bow. They were no master of it by any means, but he wielded it enough to defeat Gaius and his Ultimate Weapon.
She did not really think much on what he wielded until they heard a voice in a particular alleyway in the streets of Ishgard. This voice leading her to a certain man slumped against a wall, greatsword laying next to him. This was where their journey to becoming a Dark Knight began. If you know the Dark Knight questline then I won't get too into it, but I will comment on how it personally ties with Khei's story. Khei is a very insecure and independent person, given how controlled she was by their mother and how people treated him growing up.Fray, subsequently Esteem, knew this too well and drew this out of her while testing him before revealing their true form. Fray and subsequently Myste continued to test Khei even after taking the mantle of the Dark Knight. Khei struggled, especially after the death of Haurchefant, whom she had fallen in love with as her first and only love (HW spoilers). There were times when he didn't think she could do it, carry the weight of it all. But Myste and Fray pushed them to the brink, to that edge, until he grit her teeth and bared all the pain, the sorrow, the loss, and the responsibility of the Warrior of Light. Khei often jokes that he "bleeds black instead of red" because of how devoted they are to her Dark Knight class. When Khei fully accepted their role as a Dark Knight, accepted Esteem, accepted who she truly is, their eyes changed. His right eye turned white, the same white that Fray's eyes were. There are times when she can be seen talking with Esteem, who still bears the appearance of Khei's original Au Ra self. When this happens, as well as when he summons Esteem into battle, the white in their right eye changes back to the original blue to match her left until Esteems joins back together with Khei.Dark Knight was all Khei knew for most of her travels from there. He did not think much on wielding anything other than their trusty greatswords, especially Deathbringer itself. However, as time went on and he lost more and more friends, loved ones, and people all around them, she began to feel helpless. Even though he does her best to protect everyone, to be the shield against Eorzea's worst enemies, people still fall all around them. What hit the nail in the coffin, much to the Scions' surprise, was Zenos' death. Not when he slit his own throat, but when he died by Khei's own hands (EW spoilers, tw sui ment). Much to most of the Scions' dismay and confusion, Khei cared a lot about him, probably even loved him if you asked her. After recovering from his injuries, Khei actually went missing for about 6 months after the Scions' official disbandment (EW spoilers). When Khei came back out of hiding, he was found wielding a Scythe and speaking with voidsent. She was trying to reconnect with him in the only way he knew and could not find in himself to grieve in any other way, as she no longer muster tears that he had already shed before. However, she did not continue wielding the scythe when they returned to the Scions. Instead, he turned to Y'shtola to help teach him how to wield aether. Khei has always struggled with wielding aether for magicks and often expends it in large bursts when on the field with greatsword in hand. But he was determined to learn healing magicks so that he could be more helpful and save more people, no matter what anyone said. Y'shtola helped as best as she could but even she had not wielded such magicks in some years and instead insisted she he went to Gridania to learn at the Conjurer's Guild there. So they did, and through a lot of studying and training and failed attempts. he began to learn how to control their aether and heal those around him. But he did not stop there, he even went to libraries to study books on healing and white magic (though they mainly struggled with reading at all). She worked hard for a year until he had thoroughly understood white magic and can freely and effortlessly wield their own aether. There are still times when she expends too much aether when taking up the role of a White Mage, but he is determined to one day master the arts of white magic and controlling their aether.Dark Knight will forever be the main job Khei wields, greatsword feeling most comfortable and natural in their hands when on the field. But she has started using healing magic as a White Mage more and more frequently. He often asks which would be most helpful when she knows that they will be in combat with his comrades. However, that does not mean that she's not capable of using both. There are times when they will lend some healing even when heading the team as a Dark Knight, pressing a hand to his comrade and using white magics to heal. His comrades have commented that they have seen small, aetherial white lillies sprout from her hand while he heals but Khei has never seen such a thing (especially since he tends to close their eyes to concentrate on healing).

Endwalker Spoiler Lore

do not read this section if you have not completed Endwalker MSQ yet or finished it in it's entirety, iykyk

Khei is the Source shard of Atlas, the seat of the Azem in the Convocation of Fourteen. Atlas was a free-spirit, coming and going as they pleased with little interest in staying in one place. They would constantly get harassed by Hades and other Convocation members for never following proper protocol and not doing their required paperwork, but they cared very little about it all. In fact, they never even wanted to take up the seat of Azem in the first place. The only reason Atlas accepted it in the first place was because Venat had directly asked them to.

They loved traveling and exploring nearby stars and different biomes, seeing all matter of life and environments. Though they constantly were drawing up everything they saw and explored, they almost never submitted concepts to the Convocation. It wasn't because they never had new ideas for the world, but instead wanted to see it grow and change before their own eyes.

They of course wore the normal grey robes the Convocation wore, however most of the time they can be seen with their sleeves rolled up and tied with their forearms exposed with tons of notes and scribbles covering their arms. They also always have their large book that has leather straps connected to it to transform it into a bag slung over their shoulders with a small pouch of utensils attached to the book.

Their hair is black, long and messy with the front pieces of their hair tied back and out of their face. Sometimes they tied back all of their hair when they are out on the field doing more intense work. Their eyes are a glowing yellow-orange, like the sun was held in their eyes to gaze upon all. Their skin is a tan brown with freckles splattered all over their face and body. They are the second shortest member of the Convocation, only beating out Elidibus by a few inches, with a slim-fit body. Though they don't particularly enjoy taking up arms, when necessary they can be seen wielding a large axe, with it's blade in the shape of a crescent moon and holding a similar glow to that of their eyes. In fact, some say that when Atlas is locked in combat, both their eyes and axe glow brighter.

About the Player

Hi, my name is Rae (they/he), and I am the player behind the character Khei Altaire. I live in the United States and I am currently 26 years old.

I don't really RP with Khei but I am always down to making friends and running content with people, both casual and hardcore.

I play on the Faerie (Aether) server and my discord is @miqorae, so hit me up if you would like to talk or hang out!

My timezone is Central Time (CT) and I am hit or miss online so you are more than welcome to hit me up to see if I'm on and/or want to do stuff!

I do also occassionally post my adventures/gposes on BlueSky of Khei, alongside my fiance and friends!

Please do not contact me about ERP, act genuinely creepy, if you're anti-LGBTQ+, racist, zionist, misogynistic, and/or a general bigot. I do not tolerate said behavior and have no problem blocking you from my life. :)

Frequently Asked Questions

What made you want to make a Miqo'ra/change into a Miqo'ra?

I played as a Male Raen Au Ra from ARR to the end of Endwalker (I still have my original Endwalker screenshot, ifykyk, as my Au Ra!) I really loved their design but was kinda wanting to mess around with her design since I was caught up on the story, for the most part. I really loved the Miqo'te emotes and overall design so I fanta'ed into a Male Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te for funsies. But then I really fell in love with his design at the time and played through post-EW as well as DT as a Male "Miqo'te" (aka Miqo'ra). Then, one day my fiance and I were griping about how cute all the female gender variations of glams were so we decided to give the female variations of the Miqo'te and Viera a try. Now I think Khei is absolutely perfect and I love the new design a lot! But I loved being an Au Ra so much and I didn't want to completely erase it from his identity so I wanted to keep traits of it in their new design. So when I saw other people making Miqo'ra's and other hybrid races I decided to do the same! I am really grateful to my fiance for porting a scale mod that I wanted to female Miqo'te because it was exactly what I wanted for him, so now they are complete and perfect! <3

Why did you change your character's name from Keiho Buhen to Khei Altaire?

When I first started playing FFXIV, I had decided that I wanted a lore accurate name for my character. So, since my character was a Raen Au Ra at the time, I did some research to find a Japanese name that would fit the idea I had for this character, ultimately coming to Keiho Buhen. Even after I fantasia'd into a Male Miqo'te I kept the name, and eventually added an apostrophe to her first name (Kei'ho) to blend the name traditions of the Miqo and Au Ra. However, when my fiance and I fanta'ed this last time, I decided it was time to change her name entirely. I wanted to keep it similar enough to their previous name but still make it ultimately different and unique. I often nicknamed my WoL Kei because it was short for Keiho and was cute, so I decided to stick with that and just change the spelling a bit to ultimately land on Khei. I had told my fiance I wanted to take his WoL's last name and boom: Khei Altaire was reborn!

Are you a part of a static or looking for one?

Yes! I'm a part of a static that includes some of my FC members that is mostly casual (doing old EX's and Savages unsynced) but we have decided that a couple members and I will be tackling M5-M8S this tier! This will be my first on content savage tier so I am very excited. Also my fiance and I are looking to start progging ultimates (starting with UWU) after we finished Pandae Savage so I am very excited for that! My fiance and I are open to joining statics for any kind of content so if you are recruiting for any tanks or healers we would be more than happy to join!
